What you need to file your taxes:

Personal Information

  • Social Security numbers

  • Full names and date of births

  • Identity protection PIN (if issued by IRS)

  • Copy of your driver's license or at least the expiration date (if filing in Virginia)

  • Where you want to receive your refund (if you have one)

If you have a dependent

  • Social Security numbers

  • Full names and date of births

  • Any earned income by the dependents

  • Form 8232 if custodial parent is releasing the right to claim their child to you

Sources of Income

  • W2s

  • 1099s (potentially 1099-MISC and/or 1099-NEC) or investment income (1099-INT, 1099-OID, 1099-DIV, 1099-B, 1099-S)

  • K-1s

  • Records of expenses (if self-employed)

  • Records of depreciable assets

  • Home office details

  • Any estimated tax payments (1040-ES)

  • Records of rental income and expenses (including cost, date placed in service, etc. for depreciation)

  • Pension, Annuity or IRA income (1099-R)

  • Social Security Income (SSA-1099)

  • HSA Income (1099-SA or 1099-LTC)

  • Cryptocurrency transaction details

  • Personal income (1099-K) or other income such as jury duty, hobbies, prizes, trusts, royalties, or state-tax refunds

Deductions

  • Mortgage interest 1098

  • Real estate and personal property taxes paid

  • Energy-saving improvements

  • Charitable donations (either gifts, non-cash, or miles)

  • Medical expenses (if you think they exceed 7.5% of your AGI) including insurance, doctors, healthcare, dentists and hospitals

  • Childcare expenses such as fees paid for daycare if preschool or younger, baby-sitter if under 13 and both work, or dependent care FSA

  • Educational deductions on student loan interest, 1098-E, 1098-T, itemized qualified education expenses, or scholarships or fellowships

  • Teacher expenses if you paid out of pocket and were not reimbursed

  • State and local sales taxes

  • Vehicle taxes

  • HSA and IRA contributions - form 5498
